Stapels at the tax-office.

From Church-books, civil registries and other sources we know that the Stapels in the table on the right eventually originate from Gendt. All twelve were em- ployed in one capacity or another by local or national tax services. Maybe there are more, not yet identified.

On top are the descendants of Johan Hendrik, eldest son of David (I). As a German immigrant he had two sons working at Dutch tax-offices: Johannes (I), who cover- ed Borculo and environs with his 4 sons and Hendrik, who worked by river with his two sons and son in law Jacobus Hendrikus Ritmeester from Brielle, married with Hendrik's eldest daughter Sophia Cornelia.

Then there were 2 greatgrandsons of Johan Hendrik's son David (II): my uncles Chris and Ben with his son Bernardus Cornelis as well as two sons of their aunt (Hendrina) Alijda working at the tax-office: Hendrik Willem Frederik Zoetekouw, who died as chief Customs-House officer at 40 in Amsterdam and his youngest brother Johannes Bernard who was customs official in Eindhoven, Amsterdam and Venlo resp..

Finally David's (I) son Frederik had 2 greatgrandsons in The Hague and via his daughter Aleida a grandson Jan George Schneijder from Waardenburg, all at the tax-services.
The simple family tree below clarifies the relationships.

A journal for tax-officials like there is in the police force (Alg.Pol.blad) is not available. My genealogy data do not include any detail about the tax related work of the earlier Stapels. Yet, reading the title "slooprower" of 170 years ago, I see a young Hendrik Stapel rowing furiously to collect duties and excises from bargemen sailing by, board their barges, inspect the cargo and later enter his drawings with his goosefeather in his account books.

It is fascinating to see Willem Frederik (II) and his wife Rijkje Dorst, parents of the tax-Stapels in The Hague and themselves coffeehouse keeper and servant, raise their children to professions like attorney, antiquarian, VOC historian (F.W. Stapel) or General Audit officer. In comparison, their family members were innkeeper, barber, timber-merchant, stoker, coachman, servant or lamp-lighter. His father Willem Frederik (I), in 1825 the first Stapel from Gendt who married in The Hague, yet started as a waggoner in Gendt, became coachman straight away in The Hague, but was a tapper according to his children's birth certificates as of 1836.
Therefore I will concentrate on the professional activities of my uncles Chris en Ben, who always warmly welcomed me when I unexpectedly rang their doorbell.
The Amsterdam and Roosendaal familycards from Chris and his father resp. show many details already but Bea, Chris' youngest daughter, found his service record and other documents as well. More about his life and carreer can be read at Chris Stapel.
On uncle Ben I got a few details from his father's familycard, as well as my ±1961 memory of his spacy office at the 1st floor of the Ministry of Finance at the Buitenhof. I still hear him find his wording, thoughtful and yet firm. Amidst all the business of home, work and a rehousing on top his daughter Emmy yet took some time to look into this attic box with family papers! At Ben Stapel the result can be read.

On familycards the number of address changes is striking. One moved houses so to speak when the wallpaper needed a change and went with the work. Apparently that was much more common then today, consider- ing that jobmobility was high in the pre-war Netherlands. Without public transport or bike you had to live at walking distance from work.

At the taxoffice this was compensated with an extra-ordinairy job- and social security. Collection, documentation and book keeping of taxes was seen as vital for the correct conduct of the state, by national and local authorities alike. So, these were quite keen to value their experts and made it a priority.
