Bernard, backyard 210 Spoorstraat, ±1934.
The accident with locomotive 8116
The tragedy on that foggy dawn of Tuesday March 19, 1935 is clear enough from the newspapers and the lawsuit following in October. The tumult of the collision was heard in the wide vicinity: In her bed, 210 Spoorstraat Bernard's wife Nella heard the bang too, as did neighbours in the Waterstraat, since it happened only a few hundred meters away. Later in the Charitas Hospital, Bernards oldest sons Chris and Henk watched how his arms were immersed in ice baths, to no avail. The doctor said that only his strong hart had kept him alive until a quarter past ten that evening. Three months after his death Nella moved to 92A Molenstraat and near the end of WWII she left for her family in Friesland, where she died in 1948 and where her grave is. (Sources: vader, Beppie and Betsy) After the collision Locomotive 8116 has never been used again (see in "On Rails"). The broken steampipe is clearly visible in the creasy cabin.
