Dike issues 1794 To the Most Noble Dike-Reeve of the Overbetuwe Office Most Noble Lords, The undersigned persons Hendrik Stapel and Gerrit Cornelissen, inform you with ever so humble respect that this summer they have contracted two dike compartments near Pannerden for the sum of 535 guilders (± € 4000) and because as contractors they had no knowledge of these matters, they have been seriously mislead by a person who said to be well informed of dike works and whom we asked to review the works before contracting, may God help us to better regret, and in that way have been greatly aggrieved. Also the heavenly weather and severe drought that the earth was as a stone, not enabling that we could continue the work, even though so many a man were employed to that end, as well as xxxxxxxx xxxxx causing us considerable damage: And because suppliants are persons who must earn a livelihood for their wives and children with their bare hands, these contracts weigh heavy upon us; so we take the liberty to turn to Your Most Noble Lordship with the supplication that it may please Your Most Noble Lordship to look upon us humble persons with your eyes of mercifulness; and if we are allowed to beg you for a little assistance or gratification because of the said contract and its too few stipulated pennies: Hope and trust that this our minor request may be considered by Your Most Noble Lordship In respect whereof, Hendrik Stapel, G. Cornelissen (home = www.cstapel.nl) |
